Are You Over Watering Your Garden?

!±8± Are You Over Watering Your Garden?

Most gardeners know when their garden needs watering and are well aware of the effects of under watering their plants. Too few gardeners are aware of the dangers of over watering, however. Over watering is even worse and more damaging. The biggest reason for the death of a house plant is because it has been over watered.

Depending on the type of plant, the time of year, the temperature, your climate, the signs of an over watered plant are generally universal. The most common symptoms are defoliation where the lower leaves on the plant turn yellow and fall, wilting or drooping, spotted foliage, and gray fuzzy mould around the stem, leaves and flowers of the plant.

These symptoms can also be an indication of other problems rather than over watering. Sudden and fast defoliation could also be caused by rapid changes in temperature and possibly under watering. Gradual defoliation could be from insufficient light or fertilizer. Too much fertilizer or exposure to extreme cold could make the leaves fall. An easy way to determine whether you are over watering is by carefully observing how frequently you water your plants. Another way is to check the plant's roots to see if they appear rotten.

The plants in your garden should receive about one inch of water per week, as a general rule. This is only a starting platform for watering your garden; it is much more effective if you personally observe your garden in order to judge how much water it needs. Depending on the seasonal needs of your garden plants, remember that this one inch amount will have to be adjusted from time to time.

The rate of evapotranspiration is one of the most significant environmental factors affecting how much water your garden will need. Evapotranspiration refers to the two ways that plants lose water. Evaporation is when your plants naturally loose water into the air. Transpiration is when plants lose water by itself, usually through the leaves or the stem.

A most effective way of watering your garden is with a hose and making the task easy is a water hose reel. So many times it is a drudgery to unwind the kinks out which stop the flow or untangle a hose that has been put away hastily. A hose reel will solve these problems. In this way, the task will be less overlooked and ensure your garden gets the water when it needs it.

Just use some common sense when watering your garden. First, simply examine the soil to see if it is too dry and crumbly, or if it's too wet and muddy. Checking the soil often will help you avoid both over watering and under watering. Second, water slowly. Watering too quickly causes runoff and waste. Third, water deeply so that more than just the top layer of soil receives water. You want to make sure the water is getting to the root system. And last gardening tip is to water your garden in the morning when it's cool. If you water during the day the heat of the sun causes the water to evaporate too quickly. And if you water in the evening disease and fungal growth can occur in humid climates.

Troubleshooting Common Electric Lawn Mower Problems - Part 1

!±8± Troubleshooting Common Electric Lawn Mower Problems - Part 1

The weekend rolls around, and it's a beautiful sunny Saturday morning. Instead of heading down to the beach with the dog and kids or hitting the green for a round of golf, you decide to bite the bullet and tackle the lawn. But when you pull the lawn mower out and go to get started, it all goes downhill - so you shove the mower to the back of the shed and decide to let the grass grow wild instead. Sound familiar? If you've got a corded or cordless electric lawn mower, there are a number of common problems you're likely to encounter throughout its lifespan of use. So here are some tips on troubleshooting the most common complaints people have about electric lawn mowers.

Lawn mowers are machines, and like all things mechanical, they may break down or require maintenance from time to time. If you own an electric lawn mower, the good news is that in general these types of mowers require much less maintenance than traditional gas powered mowers. Unlike gas mowers, electric powered models do not require gas fuel, oil changes, new spark plugs or air filters.

One of the most important features of your electric mower is its power supply. For corded mowers, you will need to take care of the electric cord as this connects your mower to the power socket which drives the whole thing. When mowing, watch where you are going and take care not to mow over the cord or trip on it as you are going along. Never try and yank the cord out from the power socket, as this could damage it or cause you to injure yourself. After you have finished mowing, roll the cord up neatly so it is free from kinks and twists that will potentially weaken or crack the cord.

For battery operated or cordless electric lawn mowers, there is no cord to worry about; however you will need to maintain the mower battery. Always read the manufacturers guidelines or instructions on battery care. Some mowers will be delivered fully charged, while others will need to be charged up before first use. Get into the habit of recharging your battery immediately after you have finished mowing - that way when you go to mow next time your mower will be ready to go straightaway. Try not to fully drain the battery as this can cause damage to it - if your mower has a power level indicator, keep an eye on this while mowing so you know when your battery levels are getting low. Cold weather and heavy use can drain battery power faster, so be aware of this if you live in a cold climate or have very rapid grass growth to counteract.

5 Summer Time Weight Loss Ideas

!±8± 5 Summer Time Weight Loss Ideas

The warm weather is here, and so is my winter weight. Perhaps yours is too? Summer is a time of wearing fewer clothes, being more active, and excess weight being more apparent. I planned on losing weight in the spring, but it just didn't happen, just like most people. You can lose weight in the summer while still having more fun. Here are a few easy ideas.

1) Summer is a time of grilling and barbeques, and eating food often means gaining weight. It certainly is possible to gain weight grilling and eating, but it's also easy to lose weight. The standard regiment of hotdogs and burgers doesn't help, but there are healthy alternatives. I try to grill more seafood, chicken, and I love turkey burgers as well. These are all tasty yet lower fat and calorie alternatives. By the way, skip the chips if you can or at least try some of the reduced fat chips - they taste about the same unlike some horrible low fat substitutes. Fruit salad is always good in the summer.

2) If you are a beach person, be active at the beach instead of just lying on a towel and soaking up the sun. Play Frisbee, go swimming, take a nice walk, play volleyball. Any activity is great, certainly better than just lying there like a beached whale.

3) Summer means more drinking, but there are lower calorie choices. Instead of a sugary soda you may opt for unsweetened ice tea or diet soda, or how about just plain old water perhaps flavored by a slice of lemon or lime? And if you are a beer or wine drinker, try to moderate your consumption as they are full of calories.

4) Take up an old or new activity. For example this summer the kids and I are biking a fair amount. We don't call it work or exercise; it's just a very fun thing to do. I managed 10 miles today just playing around with my 6 and 7 year old on bikes. The calories add up quickly. We've also started fishing which involves quite a bit of walking and hiking. So what are you doing this summer?

5) There should be plenty of local produce available in most areas. Eat it! It's delicious, healthy, and you will eat less unhealthy foods! There are some things I detest when not fresh, like string beans, which absolutely rock when fresh!

It's summer. Losing weight should be easy with just a little effort.
